Zion

From Zion, perfect in beauty, God shines forth.

Psalm 50:2 NIV

I bookmarked this verse a few months ago because I wanted to use it for a friend of mine’s birthday. You guessed it, her name is Zion. I literally just searched for the name Zion in my bible app, and out of the many verses, this was the one that I loved the most.

Zion, perfect in beauty. Wow. That’s some way to describe whatever or whoever.

Perfect in beauty

Zion is actually a synonym for Jerusalem. In the Old testament, the temple was built in Jerusalem and that was where God dwelt. With that I mind, we understand why God would shine forth out of Zion, obviously because he dwelt there.

But now, in the new testament, Jesus came as the actual manifestation of God himself, so after he resurrected, God no longer dwells in temples. Instead He stays in the our hearts (in the person of the Holy Spirit). So, we are the new Zion. Our bodies are temples in and of itself where God is and speaks to us. There’s no more tiresome ceremonies to see or meet with God, He’s right there, closer than you know, inside of every believer.

With this in mind, this verse has an even more amazing meaning. With Christ in our hearts, (we as Zion) are perfect. How do I know this?

For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.

Hebrews 10:14 NIV

However, we are not perfect because of our own efforts but because of Jesus. And not just that, we are made beautiful. Another verse says we are beautifully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). And out of this perfect beauty, God himself shines forth. He illuminates our lives with his light.

As believers, we are not called to be dishearted, sorrowful, downcast, sorry excuses. We are called to be a literal representation of God’s amazing beauty and light. To shine and show his love and compassion and share his Gospel.

So with this, always be reminded that you are a carrier of the very essence of God’s nature.

You are perfect.

You are beautiful.

You are a light giver.
